As a result of the growth in the ageing population in the Darwin region and a desire to encourage extended families to remain in the area, the Northern Territory government granted a parcel of land at Fannie Bay in Darwin to Southern Cross Care (SA & NT).

In October Southern Cross Care awarded a contract in excess of $15 million to Norbuilt Pty Ltd, a Darwin based building company to construct stage 1 of the development.

Plans to build a Supported Living (residential aged care) and Retirement Lifestyle Resort have been finalised and the soil turning ceremony with local dignitaries and politicians is scheduled for early December.

This will be the first large scale development of its kind in the area and local architect Vin Keneally has emphasised his commitment to providing a resort truly in keeping with the unique local lifestyle and tropical environment.

There is much excitement building around what is seen as a much needed
community lifestyle initiative. The first stage of the resort will consist of 9 luxury Retirement units, 65 ensuited supported care units and 5 staff units.

The facility will be located in a prime location in Fannie Bay, within walking distance of the beach. The historically significant site is close to transport and facilities.

Michael Bendyk, CEO and the Board of Southern Cross Care are delighted to have the opportunity to expand into an area where its services are greatly needed and its philosophy of care will make a significant difference to the ageing population in this unique community.
