Frequently Asked Questions

What steps should I take to register my name for residential accommodation in a Southern Cross Care Nursing Home or Hostel?
Southern Cross Care will register a prospective resident for accommodation in a nursing home or hostel after the person has been assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) as being eligible for residential care.

Once you have an assessment you should place your name on the waiting list with several residential facilities. You may not be offered the home of choice but if you accept a placement you can retain your name on the waiting list at your preferred facility and seek a transfer when a suitable vacancy arises.

Can I register my name at a facility prior to an assessment?
No. Placement is dependent of each individuals care requirements. An ACAT assessment is mandatory to assess your needs.

When a room/bed becomes available, how is the next person chosen?
As a vacancy arises, the facility assesses the person with the highest needs and who also meets the criteria of the vacancy ie. gender, location of room etc.

Who should I contact to discuss the financial arrangements that apply for residential care?
Please contact our Admissions Coordinator on 8433 0471 who will give you advice on the financial requirements for incoming residents in our nursing homes (high level care) and hostels (low level care).

In accordance with government requirements, the daily fee is calculated by Centrelink, and as a result our coordinator will only be in a position to give you an approximate cost until written confirmation is received from Centrelink.

What services are available?
In addition to the individual care offered, there are a number of visiting professionals and volunteers who provide a number of additional services including hairdressing, nail care, aromatherapy etc. Residents are encouraged to participate in the regular outings and activities scheduled by staff.

Can I visit the facility and rooms?
Our facilities welcome your inspection. Please contact the facilities and arrange an appointment to visit the facility.

What am I allowed to bring when I am allocated a placement?
Generally residents are able to bring small furnishings such as table, chair, lounge chair, bar fridge, dresser as well as their personal items such as clothing, pillows, wall hangings. Most rooms have built in robes. Linen, towels and blankets are supplied by us. You may bring your own quilt or blanket.

What are the visiting hours?
Generally you are able to have visitors at any time. However for the personal security of all residents and staff there may be some restrictions regarding access on weekends and at night. Check with the facility to ascertain their particular security requirements.

What is ‘Extra Service'?
Some aged care facilities offer residents a higher standard of accommodation, services and food at a higher fee. These arrangements offer this greater level of service to residents who wish to pay additional fees for the high level of ‘hotel' services.

Southern Cross Care has several facilities with a designated wing allocated to Extra Services.

What fees and charges will be involved in Extra Services?
Staff will discuss the package of extra services that are available at a particular facility and subsequently the additional cost structure.
