Better community
The Pines is a community rich in history. It was first owned by retailer John Martin in the 1880s. His daughter Ada sold it to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in 1941, who used it as a home for unmarried mothers. Until The Knights of the Southern Cross, The founders of Southern Cross Care, took over to provide affordable housing for older people.
Today, John Martin's historic home still stands. It is now a Community Centre that hosts many fun activities and events for residents of The Pines. The Community Garden is another popular spot for residents to come together to grow produce and socialise, while the Men's Shed is popular with male residents.
