The original building at the centre of The Pines precinct is called John Martin House after John Martin, a former department store owner who lived at The Pines in the early 1900s. John Martin's daughter Ada gave the property to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in 1941 and the building was home to women and girls in need until 1971 when Southern Cross Care purchased the property.
