Banners galore
Ruby Cameron’s love of sewing has wonderfully captured the colourful spirit of Oakfield Lodge Residential Care.
At 91, she only recently discovered her love of sewing and we can all be very thankful for it.
Ruby has created bright fabric banners on a variety of themes to celebrate culture, seasonal events and special times of the year.
At 91 years, Ruby’s love of sewing has only recently been rediscovered.
Born between the Hills areas of Harrogate and Woodside in a small cottage, Ruby knew growing up that her parents had a tough time during the Depression but they were happy.
Handmade clothes were common back then of course.
When she married in 1951 Ruby moved to Mount Barker and had three children. She began to make clothes for her own daughters as a hobby but it slowed down.
That was until the opportunity came up to jump on the sewing machine at Oakfield Lodge - and Ruby was ready to go!
Lifestyle Assistant Gail Walker sets up the design of the banner and cuts out the fabric pieces, then hands everything on to Ruby for construction.
Although Ruby was involved in the designs at the start, her real interest was in sewing. She’s not fussed by the design - as long as it is nice and bright!
“The brighter the better,” Ruby said.
