Circle of knitters brings hope and blankets to warm those in need
Up to 14 women meet regularly at The Waterford to share their support, catch up on goings on over a cuppa and knit.
They enter the lounge from various doors at the designated time each week and, needles quick to be in hand, their rhythmic tic, tic, tic quickly gets underway.
Seated comfortably around the lounge, they enjoy friendship and know that every stitch they make and every square they create goes to a mighty good cause: Helping keep people in need warm.
Sue Vickers moved into the Carmelite precinct in 2016 and took on the group’s organisation in 2018, taking the reins from Elizabeth Pudy who began the group.
These skilled knitters have created an eye-popping 16,436 coloured squares since they began.
It’s knitter rules, so the colours and patterns of each square are completely up to each individual to choose.
This results in bright and beautiful creations and, to date, each of their large squares has been turned into a total of 587 very large and warm blankets.
“That’s an awful lot of squares,” admitted Sue.
“No knots,” she smiled toward the women, “only at the end of the row”. This instruction naturally drew quite a few chuckles.
