Garden gurus share expertise with Retirement Living communities
Residents from across several Southern Cross Care Retirement Living communities travelled to Pooraka for a master class in community gardens.
The residents made wonderful connections as they chatted about gardening, shared knowledge and experiences, and marvelled at the productivity of the Pooraka Community Garden.
The garden was funded by the Southern Cross Care Community Foundation, and has been thriving under the care of Pooraka residents Denis, Leigh, and Bill over the last three years.
The space yields a fantastic variety of seasonal produce, including pumpkins and watermelons, with excess crops donated to the local Foodbank.
Whether it’s for a community BBQ or the daily 3pm get-together, the garden is also the heart of the Pooraka community.
As part of the inter-community event, Property Grounds Operations Manager Dan Johnson also shared his expertise on soil health, propagation, and the secrets to growing the perfect tomato, reminding everyone that getting your hands in the soil is true “soul food”.
Visitors and Pooraka residents alike took away from the event a renewed passion for gardening, plenty of tips and tricks for their own community gardens and newly formed friendships.
