After playing Bowls for a combined 69 years, four Southern Cross Care Retirement Living residents did their communities proud at the inaugural Inter-Village Bowls Competition.

Held at Living Choice Fullarton on Monday 10 October, Southern Cross Care was represented by Christine Davidson from Coach House Mews, and John Whelan, Ian Williams, and Brian Webber from Carmelite.

The Victoria Grove team won, Southern Cross Care team finished second by only three shots, while Living Choice Red finished third.
The group said it was a fun day and they enjoyed playing as a team.

“We all like the companionship (of Bowls) and (the) challenge to play against other clubs,” John said.

“We were pleased to finish second because we played against some tough competition.”

John, Chris and Ian play pennant bowls for The Beaumont Bowling Club in Adelaide’s South East, while Brian plays social bowls at The Adelaide Bowling Club.

Watched on by fellow residents and staff, the group said they were grateful to the event organisers and that they’re looking forward to future similar events.

Lawn bowls is a popular form of physical and social activity in Australia. There are currently in excess of 250,000 registered lawn bowls members in Australia.

However, the increase in popularity of social bowls has seen the number of participants increase to over 500,000 nationwide.
