Marilyn has become a busybuddy

Marilyn enjoyed a game of Jenga

Adelaide client Marilyn Geddie has a new adventure every week from the comfort of her own home. She joined the Buddy Program in August 2021 to take part in fun activities and social connection.

The Buddy Program links community members with buddy support workers who provide companionship, promote independence and support engagement in meaningful activities.

Marilyn is most comfortable at home, so her buddy visits weekly to engage her in a range of at-home activities. She said she loves having buddy support worker Sarah visit on Saturdays and that it makes her afternoon.

Marilyn’s partner Lyall said it is good to know she has someone to talk to while he is out and that he also benefits from talking to Sarah about various topics. Lyall said most of all he loves the companionship that both he and Marilyn have received as a result of the buddy program.

Recently, Sarah looked into using the respite buddy resource library for some new activities to take to Marilyn's home. The pair have so far enjoyed the bean bag toss, Jenga, dominos and skittles, as well as a fun game using pool noodles.

“Marilyn still certainly loves her movies, but these activities have taken Marilyn's focus off the TV, which is wonderful,” Sarah said.

“The Jenga also provided an opportunity to move her away from the lounge room and into the dining room. We sat and enjoyed the game and laughed together.”

The resource library, funded by a Community Foundation grant, is available to all buddy support workers. It can help to build on the meaningful and engaging activities provided.

Sarah recommended all buddy support workers and clients investigate what the resource library has to offer.
