Meet Ian Lyon Sales Consultant, The Mornington
What drew you to a career in sales, and specifically to the retirement living industry?
My wife and I were looking at an investment property and I told the agent I was always interested in property - how do I get involved? I did the agents rep course, handed out resumes to real estate agencies and was offered an opportunity and managed to create a new career from there. That was in 1999 at 38 years of age! I retired in 2017, didn't realise it would be quite so boring doing nothing all day, everyday. An opportunity came up part time at The Mornington, I knew straight away it was the ideal job where I could help people change their lifestyle and enjoy life! Here we are.
What do you enjoy most about your job as sales manager for The Mornington?
In residential real estate it was all quite brutal, competitive and cut throat. You had to push people to make decisions, harass and compete with other agents - a whole different world thank goodness from what I'm doing now at The Mornington. I'm here to help and guide people who are looking at a change of lifestyle in retirement.
I don't harass, I don't push - I simply show people the beautiful surroundings, the lake, the homes available, the Clubhouse with all the amenities and activities and then I back off and let people make up their own minds. If they want me to assist further - great, I'm here to do just that. Their choice, their decision in their own time.
What are you most proud of in your work, at the village?
That I can genuinely help people to move into a lifestyle that they will absolutely love and be so happy they did it. I hear residents who now live in the Village say they wish they had done it so much earlier. So many people are lonely before coming to The Mornington. To see those people creating new friendships and looking so happy, does make me very proud of my work.
What is a fun fact about you that might surprise people?
I was a postman for 15 years before becoming involved in real estate, riding a pushbike/ motorbike during that time.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I try to play golf (not well), enjoy kayaking and I also consider myself a bit of a handyman, repairing things around the house. I also collect old coins & banknotes for a hobby.
What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, either professionally or personally?
"Treat others like how you'd like to be treated".
If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
David Gilmour - lead singer & guitarist from the band Pink Floyd. I know, it will be stupid to some people, but I am a massive fan!! Absolutely brilliant musician, songwriter, way ahead of his time. So many questions to ask, I'm sure he would have many interesting stories to tell.
