Meet our buzzer beater Sophie
Having reached double digits at age 10, Sophie signed up to be a volunteer - becoming Southern Cross Care’s youngest ever.
Sophie love of basketball rivals her admiration for NBA hotshot Giannis Antetokonmpo.
Whether Sophie’s on the court shooting hoops or visiting McCracken Views Residential Care in Victor Harbor, she brings the same level of passion and commitment to everything she does including volunteering.
“Basketball is my absolute favourite sport to play and watch,” she said.
“My ultimate dream is to meet Giannis Antetokonmpo who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.
“Giannis is my basketball role model and my mum is my everyday role model.”
Sophie has been a long-time visitor to McCracken where her mum Amanda works.
At age 10, Sophie has entered our Southern Cross Care history books, becoming our youngest volunteer.
Coincidentally, all-rounder Giannis became one of the youngest NBA players when he made his NBA debut.
“I have been coming to McCracken Views since I was three-days-old and have interacted with many residents after school while waiting for mum to finish work,” Sophie said.
“I enjoy hearing stories about the olden days and how things have changed.
“I love seeing residents’ faces light up when we have a conversation or just giving them a wave and a smile.
“I enjoy making a difference in their day, making them smile or laugh or just having a chat about how their day is.”
Along with her love of family, volunteering and sport, Sophie adores her pet dog, a Pocket Bulldog called Reggie.
