A mural reflecting community unveiled at Pearl in the Northern Territory

Supplied by Pastoral Carer Susan Clunies-Ross

Last year, Pearl Supported Care in Darwin was delighted to receive an internal grant from the Southern Cross Care Community Foundation to facilitate the creation of a vibrant new mural.

This artwork was commissioned for the long exterior wall of our extension area, which houses two additional wings.

To bring this vision to life, we collaborated with local artist Ange, whose background in social work and counselling made her the perfect fit for a project centered on community and inclusion.

Ange brought her heart and soul to the project, working closely with residents in the design process to create four stunning nature scenes.

The first paint went up on the wall in April 2026.

Over the following four months, community members, residents, and even staff worked side by side to create a masterpiece.

Many residents just popped in to check out progress, or to suggest the addition of their favourite reptile or bird.

The finished mural reflects the incredible beauty and diversity of the Northern Territory landscape.

The scenes transition from coastal beach cliffs and peaceful billabongs to the iconic termite mounds of Litchfield National Park and the sweeping desert of central Australia.

This collaborative effort has transformed a previously unused area into an uplifting outdoor space where residents and families can sit and enjoy the fresh air.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Ange, who made this a community project.

Her ability to welcome everyone to participate, to watch or to paint, has resulted in a space that we can all be proud of.
