New bus, new opportunities
Residents of Fullarton Residential Care have benefitted from a new bus supported by Community Foundation sponsors.
The Honda Staria is a shorter bus than others in the Southern Cross Care fleet and therefore can safely pull up directly at the entrance of the Fullarton home.
Previously, Fullarton residents needed to board the bus on the main road because the longer buses could not access the entrance.
Boarding at the entrance of the building also makes it possible for residents who use wheelchairs to board safely using the purpose-built wheelchair lifter.
Resident Loretta Boots uses a wheelchair and has been on every bus trip she can since the new bus became operational.
“I have been on a few trips and I’ve loved every one of them, and I love the driver because he explains everything, which is nice,” she said.
“On a recent trip we went into the city and my late husband built a lot of the buildings in the city and that brought back a lot of memories.
“I cried and I laughed - it was good.
“It’s nice to get out and see how the other half are living.”
Loretta added that she used to run marathons “all around the city”, having lived in Adelaide for over 50 years, and appreciated being able to get out and see the buildings again.
The bus outings are the only time Loretta leaves her Fullarton home.
Although she has three children and nine grandchildren who visit regularly, the outings on the bus are still a social opportunity that is key to Loretta’s wellbeing.
All bus trips on Southern Cross Care buses are made possible by the Community Foundation’s generous sponsors and donors.
Buses are fitted with age-friendly safety equipment so that all members of the community can travel in comfort.
