Pearl continues to develop into a thriving community

Artist's impression of Pearl Supported Care

The expansion of Pearl Supported Care in Darwin is continuing to grow from the ground up.

The design incorporates several dementia-friendly design features that are starting to take shape, including extra wide corridors that give each resident's room its own 'front porch' entry - a personalised space overlooking the external landscaped gardens.

All corridors have garden views with extensive glazing for comfort and detailed timber fretwork adds to the traditional Darwin home-like feel.

The corridors run along the external wall line, giving residents constant visual and physical place references as they walk throughout the new extension.

The new wings in the extension will be named Mandorah and Casuarina, to follow the local beach theme already in place for the exitsing Pearl wings.

Consultation with current residents and family members around these names received a hugely positive response, with their feedback showing that Mandorah and Casuarina are recognised as significant local places.

The familiar place names bring a sense of comfort for residents and encourage positive reminiscence, invoking feelings of warm sand, the sound of waves and the breathtaking sunsets.

By using these names, we’re hoping to bring a smile to our residents’ faces, triggering those pleasant, familiar memories and a real sense of connection to their past that can boost quality of life.

Once completed, the $18 million Pearl Supported Care expansion will provide space for another 26 residents to join our community, growing our capacity to care for older Territorians who need Residential Care by 30%.

This transformational project has been made possible thanks to the support of the Commonwealth and Northern Territory Governments.
