Richard Mann is one of our men’s health champions
International Men’s Day is held annually on 19 November and the 2024 theme is Men's Health Champions.
A key aim of International Men’s Day is to highlight the issues faced by men and boys face, including the fact that 50 Australian men under the age of 75 die each day from preventable causes.
But Australia leads the world in taking action for men’s health, so this International Men’s Day celebrates the Men’s Health Champions around the country, shining a light on our role models.
Richard Mann is Southern Cross Care’s very own champion.
Richard worked as a Retirement Living Sales Consultant with Southern Cross Care for 15 years.
He retired in 2023 and didn’t wait long before returning to our community as a volunteer.
“I really enjoyed my time here at Southern Cross and then I just thought I wanted to give something back,” Richard said.
He drives the Care Car for a full day once a fortnight, volunteering his time to ensure members of our community can make it to their important health appointments and exercise sessions.
“I want to remain active, I don't want to be just someone sitting at home and just doing nothing so that was one of the reasons I stuck up my hand to volunteer,” Richard said.
Volunteering is a big factor in looking after Richard’s own social health, but he also looks after his physical health by eating a healthy and balanced diet and exercising regularly - including weekly rounds of golf.
“I take the attitude of trying to keep fit as much as I can,” Richard explained.
“I'm now at the age where it's a bit like a football match; you know we're in the last quarter there's no doubt about that.
“My dad died at 50 and my mother died at 95 so I don't know where I fit in. I don't know whether I'm in the first two minutes of the last quarter or not - I certainly hope it's just the first part.”
The king of the general knowledge quiz, Richard likes to keep his mind active by taking on a number of different knowledge-based games, as well as reading the newspaper to keep up with goings on.
Richard has passed on some of his healthy habits to his son too.
His son visits regularly on a Saturday morning to cook a healthy but delicious breakfast (although the cooking skills haven’t come from Richard!) and they sit down to do a quiz together.
By living a healthy lifestyle in all aspects, Richard is championing a healthy male role model.
