Stay Connected This Christmas: Simple Ways to Share the Joy

Residents clapping and smiling

The Christmas and New Year season is a wonderful time for celebration, but for many older people, it can also bring feelings of isolation.

At Southern Cross Care, our commitment to helping everyone be Better for life includes supporting your well-being and ensuring you feel connected to your community.

Maintaining strong social ties is not just about fun; it’s a key part of healthy ageing. Social connections can boost your mood, improve your health, and give you a strong sense of belonging and purpose. This festive season, why not try some simple ways to reach out and share the joy?

  1. Make a call: The simplest way to connect is often the best. A friendly phone call or a video chat with a family member or friend can make a world of difference.

  2. Share your stories: Holidays are a perfect time for reminiscing. Ask a loved one to look through old photo albums with you or share a treasured memory from Christmases past. Sharing your stories builds your relationships with others and gives you a chance to feel heard as you share what’s important to you.

  3. Get involved: Many local community groups, clubs, and places of worship host Christmas events like carols concerts or community lunches. Attending an event can introduce you to new people and there will always be a festive atmosphere that brings out the joy of connection for everyone. Check your local noticeboards for upcoming community events and how to get involved.

  4. Connect with neighbours: You could consider a small act of kindness, such as writing holiday cards for your neighbours, which can provide a great sense of purpose and open doors for more connection in the future. You could also ask your neighbours whether they will be going on holiday over Christmas and talk about what they’re looking forward to, or offer to keep an eye on their home while they’re away to help build your connection.

  5. Volunteer: Many charities and community centres look for extra hands during the holidays. Even an hour or two of volunteering, perhaps wrapping gifts or helping serve a community meal, can give you a sense of contribution and another avenue to make connections with new people. If you would like to explore volunteering with Southern Cross Care to connect with our community you can visit our Volunteers page.

  6. Take a festive stroll: Visit a local area known for its Christmas light displays. There will often be plenty of people around looking at the lights with you and many will be open to a conversation about the displays or the festive season in general. If you don’t feel like sharing a conversation it can also be a pleasant experience to simply take in the atmosphere of other people chatting and being merry.

The most valuable gift we can give and receive this season is the gift of connection itself. Making the effort to share your time, a simple smile, or a genuine conversation with others is a beautiful act of human kindness.
