Student Volunteer spotlight: making a difference

Alec Volunteer at Southern Cross Care The Pines Residential Care

Nine months ago Alec Bastiras was on a holiday break from his University studies and decided to look for a volunteer role to fill some of his spare time.

Searching through an online platform for suitable roles, Alec found a volunteer position at The Pines Lodge Residential Care.

With his study being in speech pathology, Alec thought volunteering in aged care would give him a good insight into a demographic of people he might work with once he graduates.

But volunteering has given him much more than just experience.

“I just enjoy getting to know everyone and getting to build that connection over every week, because you get to really see the difference that you make by just being able to help out,” Alec said.

“It’s very rewarding and it gives you a sense of meaning and purpose.”

When university resumed Alec didn’t think twice about continuing to volunteer.

“I didn’t want to stop,” he said.

“As soon as I came here everyone was really nice, everyone was really welcoming and I actually started really wanting to come in, I was looking forward to the sessions every week.”

Alec continues to visit one day a week for five hours.

In the mornings he assists with art therapy sessions, in the afternoons he supports games and other group activities, and in between he provides conversation and companionship one-on-one with residents.

With all the benefits that Alec has found in his volunteering role, he believes other students should be filling their spare time with volunteering as well.

“I think a lot of people are looking for connection but they don’t seek it out,” he explained.

“I think especially because there’s a lot going on at our age, there’s lots of things you have to consider, a lot of people don’t have the time to seek out a volunteer experience.

“But it’s something that I have personally really benefitted from, and I think other people would as well.

“Taking the first step is always the hardest part.”
