Supporting those who care for others this National Carers Week

The 2026 theme for National Carers Week is; ‘Care for a carer: Making carers visible’, encouraging all Australians to recognise, support and care for the carers in their families, workplaces and communities.

Providing ongoing support to a loved one is a deeply meaningful responsibility, and can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding.

At Southern Cross Care, we understand that to care for others effectively, family carers need time to look after their own health and well-being too.

Taking a temporary break allows carers to rest, recharge, and return to their role feeling refreshed. We believe it can also be an opportunity for their loved ones to build meaningful connections with others, and boost their wellbeing with engaging activities that promote independence.

That is why we offer tailored Respite Care services designed to support both clients and their carers.

We offer a range of flexible options to ensure you can find the right support when and where you need it:

  • In-home respite: Professional support delivered in the comfort of your home or local community, allowing carers to take a short break while their loved one receives personalised care.
  • Dementia Respite Cottages: Tailored daytime support in a comfortable, home-like environment designed for people living with dementia. Our Cottages are built on the philosophy of doing with clients, rather than doing for, focusing on meaningful engagement, enhanced well-being, maintaining independence and individual needs.
  • Residential Respite Care: Dedicated care within our vibrant Residential Care homes for longer breaks, with all of the services offered to permanent residents. Residential Respite Care placements are subject to availability and assessment.

Whether carers need support for just a day or a longer period, taking time for themselves helps ensure they can continue providing the best care for their loved ones.

If you or someone you know could benefit from a break, contact Southern Cross Care today to learn more about how our Respite Care services can help you be Better for life, or visit our Respite Care page.
