Today, the Southern Cross Care community mourns the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

This is a day of sadness for the world, particularly the United Kingdom and all the countries that form the Commonwealth of Nations (Commonwealth) of which Australia is a key part. Our hearts go out to the Queen’s family as they grieve the loss of their beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

My thoughts are with our residents, clients and staff today as they come to terms with this very sad news about the Queen, who in most cases was the only Monarch connected to Australia they have experienced in their lives. Some are British expatriates who grew up with an even stronger connection to the Queen and now call Australia home. We are here to support you through this time.

Our residents and clients are likely to have fond memories of the Queen and the high profile visits she made to Australia after her coronation in the 1950’s and in the decades after. At Southern Cross Care we recognise it will be very important for our staff to have reminiscing conversations with our residents and clients today and in the coming weeks, so they can talk about this in the context of their own lives.

Her Majesty was an inspiration to so many and whilst there is mourning, this time of reflection will no doubt celebrate a great life, steeped in service to the very end. As a beacon of strength and constancy through a time of significant change, she devoted her life to the service of her family, her country and her beloved Commonwealth. May she rest in eternal peace.
