Respite Care Fees & Funding

Respite Care funding explained

Southern Cross Care’s respite services can be funded in a range of ways. This page provides funding information and a pricing schedule for our Dementia Respite Cottages and In-Home Respite services in Adelaide, South Australia.

What are the funding options for Respite Care?

The two types of funding are Government funding and private funding.

Your eligibility for government funding and your contribution depends on your financial situation and the specific level of care required.

If you pay privately for the full cost of your services you do not require a government assessment to determine the amount of respite care you can access.

Funding options

Support at Home program

As of 1 November 2025, the Australian Government's Support at Home program will provide funding for individuals with complex care and support needs, enabling them to live independently in their own homes.

Under this program, In-Home Respite and Dementia Respite Cottages are categorised as 'independence services'. This means the Government will cover at least 50% of the cost of these respite services, with the exact percentage determined by your specific situation. You will be responsible for the remaining balance.

You need to receive an aged care assessment to determine eligibility for government funding. For more information about the aged care assessment process, visit the My Aged Care website.

Our team can also assist you with the process, call us on 1800 852 722 for help.

Overall funding through Support at Home, which for most individuals will likely include other services in addition to respite, is allocated across eight different classifications. These classifications increase from 1 to 8, correlating with a rise in needs and the requirement for more funding.

Additional funding is also available through the 12-week Restorative Care Pathway and End of Life Pathway. Furthermore, low, medium, and high levels of funding are provided for assistive technology and home modifications.

Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) provides some funding for entry level support services to older people. It promotes independence so you can live at home for longer.

For some people who are looking for respite care, CHSP can make respite services affordable.

You need a government assessment to access CHSP funding for respite care. Please call 1800 852 772  so that we can help you to apply for an assessment.

CHSP funding is subject to limitations based on geographical region, time period, and service type. Consequently, access to CHSP funding for respite care may occasionally be restricted.

In 2027, the CHSP will transition to Support at Home alongside other Government funded home care programs.

Private funding

You may choose to pay for the full cost of your respite care.

Private funding is usually used by people who:

  • Are not eligible for government funding
  • Need respite urgently but are waiting for government funding to be approved or assigned
  • Have used all their allocated funding but would like additional care or respite hours
