Discover a new sense of purpose with 'I Create' classes; An artistic journey of socialisation and independence.

Rebecca Dawson-Moore is our one and only Health & Fitness Art Co-ordinator. She runs our I Create classes at the Pines, Carmelite and the Philip Kennedy Centre.

The I Create classes are a meeting place for anybody who enjoys being creative at any level. It encourages artistic expression and socialisation - where clients can share ideas and techniques and work on their artworks.

“We try to encourage independence rather than doing things for them. I’m more of a facilitator for people, so I help them get to their end goals.” Rebecca said.

She has always worked in adult (art) education, previously working in a residential lifestyle.

“I’ve always been involved in art classes, so working here appealed to me because of the more communal side of things,” Rebecca said.

“I really enjoy the challenge of coming up with different ideas for the diversity of my groups.”

“It’s not a structured class; I can’t teach the same thing to everyone because they're all at different levels.”

“People with experience can come along to use the space and experience the likemindedness of their classmates and have the opportunity to exhibit their work through SALA and now through our own gallery that we are going to have. They’re ever-evolving groups.”

The I Create classes have a lot more to them than simply creating art. Rebecca explains:

“The classes help with all types of conditions… The lovely Raelene, for example, comes here to forget about her chronic pain. She gets so enthusiastic when talking about art and sharing her experiences and knowledge with everyone. We go to her when we want to know about a lot of things. She comes here to escape the everyday struggles that she has to face. She is very positive despite it.”

“What we do with I Create differs from how things are done residentially. There is much more emphasis on maintaining independence and dignity and validating them as human beings. They are all so clever, and I believe many people could benefit from a program like this.”
