Darrell Loves Attending the Community Respite Service at Willow Fern

Darrell engaging in community respite

Two years after Darrell Barret’s GP told him about Willow Fern Cottage Respite in Mt Barker, he is feeling the benefits for his social, mental and physical well-being more than ever.

Darrell attends Willow Fern three days a week and has an occasional overnight stay.

He particularly enjoys the daily short walks that encourage physical movement, plus any card games, bingo, mentally stimulating games and quizzes - and don’t forget the bus trips!

Any chance he gets, Darrell makes a point of saying how great it is at Willow Fern - to be around great company and keep his mind stimulated.

"So many people our age just sit at home and watch TV but at Willow Fern Cottage you can have meaningful conversations and have company," Darrell said.

His wife, Yvonne, said it’s not just about the difference that quality respite care makes for Darrell, but also for the support it gives her in caring for him.

"People in my position really need respite, it's one big thing that keeps us carers going. It is extremely important for our mental health,” Yvonne said.

“My mental health is pretty good, but Darrell being able to be cared for regularly is a big part of that reason.

“If it wasn't for Willow Fern, Darrell would have to go into permanent care. Respite allows Darrell to continue living at home with me."

While Yvonne has her break, so that she can continue to provide the best care for Darrell when he is at home, Darrell is always enjoying activities that are designed to suit his interests.

This planning behind activities is important because it helps him to engage and get the most out of his time at Willow Fern as he possibly can.

“If only more people knew about this service,” Darrell said.

There are currently daytime and overnight vacancies at Willow Fern Cottage Respite.
