Understanding Retirement Living
Southern Cross Care has been providing Retirement Living services since 1968 and while these services have changed over the years, our goal to support you to live a healthy, active and independent lifestyle, has remained the same. This page explains what you need to understand about Retirement Living.
What is Retirement Living?
Retirement Living is life in a retirement village, as part of a retirement community. Southern Cross Care believes that Retirement Living offers a better environment for you to enjoy during your retirement years. Buying into a retirement village is a lifestyle decision, it is about you living in a location you like, doing the retirement activities you choose, and being surrounded by welcoming neighbours who are in a similar stage of life to you. It is also about ageing in place, with the confidence and peace of mind that you will be set up for the future, and that your home will be suitable if you have increased health or care needs that may require home modifications or home care services.
Your Lifestyle
You may have questions about your lifestyle and how living in a retirement village will compare to living in your current home. Our retirement living villages and services are designed to support the lifestyle you want to lead. This includes locations close to your family, friends and existing networks; affordable accommodation and utilities; and a social and welcoming community, but with the privacy of your own space. Your home and village maintenance are taken care of so you can spend more time on your interests and hobbies, you have access to public transport or transport alternatives, plus services that either come to you or are located nearby. Your home has improved security and in some homes, you can use the emergency call systems for emergency support. All of this is offered alongside the chance to live with a small pet (on agreement), and of course the freedom to come and go as you please.

Choice
In Retirement Living you have the freedom and choice to live life to the fullest. Part of that choice is what type of home and village you want to live in. Southern Cross Care has a range of Retirement Living options so that you can choose a home that suits you. These include two or three bedroom villas, units, apartments and serviced apartments, as well as a choice between a large vibrant village community with many friendly neighbours or a small village with a more intimate community. There are a range of parking options depending on the community you choose, including private garages, and some villages have extra parking for your caravan. Some villages are located near public transport to help you access life outside the village. With any of these accommodation options, you can still travel as much as you want and have peace of mind knowing that your home is safe while you are away.

Fees and charges
As with all retirement villages, we require an ingoing contribution towards the cost of your home. There is also a maintenance fee, which covers the cost of upkeep on your home such as gutters, air conditioner and appliances servicing, lights and fire alarms. Your fees also cover the maintenance of common village facilities and gardens, so you don’t have to worry about the look and functionality of your village. Southern Cross Care (SA, NT & VIC) Inc is a not for profit organisation so you can rest assured your fees and charges go back into the community.
