Sophie’s skilling up!

Sophie’s skilling up!

Sophie Ignatiou has gained more self-confidence and learned new commercial cookery skills that will help her to create delicious and nutritious meals for our residents.

It’s all thanks to a partnership between Southern Cross Care and TAFE SA, who have provided 14 Food Service Assistants (FSA) with an 11-week commercial cookery program.

Sophie said it’s the ‘best thing’ Southern Cross Care has done for FSAs and for our kitchens.

“I’m very honoured to have been given this opportunity,” Sophie said.

Sophie has been an FSA for 15 years and said she really enjoyed the 5 module course which included practical classes at the  Regency TAFE Campus.

Sophie and other FSAs who completed the program will now be able to backfill Chef shifts to cover planned and unplanned leave, helping Southern Cross Care to continue to make high-quality meals in its Residential Care homes.

Southern Cross Care’s Group Manager - Procurement & Hospitality Services, Daniel Desteno, was delighted to see the program take place.

“The aim of the program is to provide staff with the opportunity to develop their skills and their knowledge in the field of commercial cookery,” Daniel said.

“...that comes with a number of benefits. It also provides our staff with the opportunity to have that flexibility as well in terms of what they do within our organisation.”

“So this  provides them with a really good opportunity to get involved in the creation of meals.”
