Fit and Flourishing: Better For Life Supports Independence in Country SA

Fit and Flourishing

The Better for Life in Country SA (BFLCSA) program is continuing to make a difference by connecting older adults in regional areas with essential allied health services that might otherwise be out of reach.

Among the program's success stories is Robyn Bateman, a resilient resident of Robe who was determined to maintain her independence after knee replacement surgery.

To prepare for her surgery and the journey ahead, she underwent prehab (the type of rehabilitation a person does before a major surgery) and saw a massage therapist. She also joined one-on-one online exercise sessions with the Southern Cross Care team to maintain her strength for a fast recovery. After her surgery, she went right back into it.

Southern Cross Care’s Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) Julie Ly, who has been working with Robyn over the past few months, commented on her progress.

“Robyn has had huge success since her surgery which is wonderful to see. With support from her local allied health team, and online Exercise Physiology sessions with us, she has been able to improve her range of motion and functional knee strength in a short time,” Julie said.

Robyn effortlessly multitasks, fitting her exercise routine in amongst household chores, baking a fresh batch of cookies and caring for her grandchildren. Her commitment to recovery has enabled her to return to doing her everyday tasks, drive around confidently in the family ute, and get back to her yoga classes and community groups which give her a strong sense of purpose throughout the week.

The Better for Life in Country SA program has yielded positive health outcomes for all involved. Participants report increased strength, improved balance, and a boost in confidence. These transformative changes are not just about physical well-being; they have a profound effect on the day-to-day lives of community members, enabling them to remain active and engaged within their communities.

This initiative is not just about exercise; it's about empowerment, using technology to enrich lives, and ultimately, helping our invaluable community members thrive in the places they call home!

The Better for life in Country SA program is just the beginning of a journey towards better Health & Wellness.
